One Day Project- Superglue Poetry

One Day Project- Happy Birthday

For this one day project, I was given the task to come up with an idea based on the song "Happy Birthday".  For this task, I decided to create four illustrations that represent the earth's birthday. Each panel shows how the earth was formed and how nature developed. I decided to include text with the illustrations by slighting changing the song to happy earth day to you.  Before sticking with idea, I made a few sketches showing a range of ideas.  After deciding that I wanted to stick to the earth's birthday idea, I started to develop my designs along with the typography. I did re-draw my designs because the typography, proportions and angles needed changing.  Now that I've altered my designs, I think the concept is much more effective. To improve my work, I now need to apply colour to it. I'm going to do this by scanning my work into Photoshop.

Packaging Briefcase- Inspiration: Ingela P Arrhenius

I've continued my research even further by finding inspiration from another Illustrator. The Illustrator that I've chosen as part of my research is Ingela P Arrhenius. The reason why I've chosen her work is because I like how she applies pattern, she has a cartoon art style and you can see that's she's thought about her design and it's composition.  The colour schemes within her designs work really well as there's a balance between bright and neutral colours.  Based on her art style, I believe that her style and products are more likely to be targeted towards young children. However, I do think that her style could work well across different target audiences and I think the image the image of the salt and pepper shakers is a good example of that.  I am now going to use this research when thinking about possible product designs. This research has reminded me to reflect upon the target audience, style, composition and colour schemes.

One Day Project- Valentines

For this one day project, I was given the task to produce an illustration that links to Valentine's Day.  When coming up with ideas, I started by making character designs and by doing some research.  I researched into Greek and Roman mythology and how certain God's and Goddesses link to Valentine's Day. Within this research, I discovered myths in Roman mythology about Cupid. There's a myth about how Cupid makes Apollo fall in love with a Goddess by striking him with a golden arrow. Afterwards, he strikes the Goddess with a lead arrow which causes her to feel repulsed by him.  I believe that my illustrations are successful because they visually communicate a story linked to my research. Also, I think that my work is successful because I've combined the uses of typography and illustration. I like this piece of work because of the patterns and mark makings that I've applied tot eh characters and text. For the colour scheme, I wanted to choose softer shades. So I ...

Packaging Briefcase- Artist Research: Tess Smith-Roberts

As part of my research for this project, I have started to do some artist research. For this research, I'm looking for inspiration within colour schemes and mediums.  The Illustrator that I've chosen is Tess Smith Roberts.  I like her work because she uses a mixture of bright and lighter colours. Another reason why I like her work is because of the patterns that she uses. Lastly, I like her work because of it's cartoon style and I believe that all of the character designs are successful.  Based on the package designs, I think that they are successful because  you can clearly see that they've thought about how the design will work with the product. Based on the mediums, these illustrations have been made digitally. Usually, I prefer traditional mediums but I think this research could encourage me to experiment digitally.

Penguin Book Project- Rathlin Island: Mood board and colour palettes

After producing some illustrations and thumbnails, I've now started to think about colour schemes. I've gathered together a variety of images that link to the books context. Such as the animals and flowers that Dara sees when he goes to Rathlin Island. Based on these images, I used the eye drop tool on Illustrator to select colours from these images. most of the colours are quite neutral so I think that I need to try and create a palette with stronger uses of colour.
