Penguin Book Project- Diary of a Young Naturalist: Target Audience

Based on how this book is in the adult non- fiction category, I believe that this book is suitable for a broad range of audiences, from teens to adults. When thinking about the demographics, I don't think this book is aimed towards a certain gender.  Thinking about the audience for this book has been useful because it has allowed me to think about how to come up with ideas/ designs that are suitably aimed towards that target audience. Because there's a broader age range for this book and there is no specific gender, I'm going to experiment with my art style and I'll try piecing together a range of colour schemes.

Packaging Briefcase- Packaging Material Research:

Cardboard- This is a good material for packaging because it's recyclable and bio degradable. Therefore, using cardboard for packaging is eco-friendly. However, cardboard is not ideal for heavy objects and is not ideal for liquid based products.    Paper- Just like cardboard, paper packaging is recyclable and bio degradable. Also, this material is beneficial because it's easy to print designs on to it.  The disadvantages of using paper is that it ends up in landfills and it's more likely to end up in landfills than plastic. Foil-  The benefit of using foil packaging is that it prevents germs coming into contact with the product. Another reason on why using foil is useful is because it keeps the food fresh. However, the disadvantage of using foil for packaging is that it's easy to tear.

Book Covers that I like:

I've recently had a look at a range of book covers for inspiration so that I can see what makes a successful book cover design. I have chosen two book cover designs that I believe are successful. The first cover is for the book 'Twilight'.  I think that it's successful because the design itself is not cluttered. It contains a simple image that does not clash with the text. Also, there is a balance of dark and brighter tones.  However, I believe that the message behind the design makes it a strong book cover. The message behind the person holding an apple represents 'forbidden fruit'- linking this to Bella and Edwards relationship.   The second cover design is for the book ' Wonder'.    I think that this design is successful because the image and text work well together. Also, I think that the illustration is successful because the face is blank- suggesting that a persons appearance is not important.

Penguin Book Project- Diary of a Young Naturalist: Spring/ Rathlin Island Illustrations

I have now started to make a variety of visual notes that present ideas/illustrations that link to Dara's Diary entries.  I've focused on making illustrations for the first chapter of this book, which is about Spring. Dara talks about how he and his family go to Rathlin Island for his birthday. Therefore, all of the illustrations that I've produced link to Dara's experience within Rathlin Island. He says that the atmosphere is calming so I wanted to portray this within my designs. Also, Dara mentions a range of mythical stories about the Island, so I've visually shown one of the stories which is about faeries living within blue bells. Lastly, Dara mentions his opinions on nature and how he doesn't like how wildlife is treated. One example of this is when he sees that a seal has a wound.  I'm happy with the visual notes that I've made because they link to Dara's thoughts, emotions and experiences. When producing these drawings, I have used a posca p...

Packaging Briefcase- Chocolate Packaging Research:

I've started my packaging briefcase project by looking at existing products/ brands for inspiration. I've gathered together a few images of product examples that present the uses of effective illustrations, typography and packaging design.  I think that each product is successful because the designs stand out based on the illustrations, colour schemes and typography. Each product here stands out and looks unique. All of these products have also effectively used the spacing and composition well. Furthermore, these designs are successful because each layout appears to have been thought about as there is a good balance of spacing so the images and text do not clash. I'm going to use this research to inspire me when thinking about colour, composition, style and creative use of packaging when making my own product packaging.
